Here on Back-Alley Beastars, we separate everyone into 3 different categories; Carnivore, Herbivore, and Hybrid! Each have their own unique set of characteristics that makes playing each one just slightly different, but they are only a very lose guideline on what you can write for your species! Don't be afraid to branch off and research different types of animals on your own!
The people in Beastars are humanoid versions of animals that exist in our universe, typically known as anthros, but for the sake of fitting with the theme of the Beastars universe we will refer to them as Nomivores. Nomivores refers to all the people in the Beastars universe and their abilities to eat food! Nomivores come in many different shapes and sizes but are most differentiated, and segregated by, their ability or inability to consume meat. There is no stronger distinction between creatures then this and it is a very crucial part of the Beastars universe. They are divided up by two very distinct roles Carnivores and Herbivores. Among these roles is the even more diverse classification of children formed from relations between two different species known as Hybrids.
Carnivores, and by extension omnivores, are the Nomivores in the Beastars universe that have the capability to digest and process meat. They are often physically superior to herbivores in many ways most usually in muscle mass and size. Shrouded in a predetermined veil of malice and danger, Herbivores are often shying away from them out of fear for their lives. Carnivores usually have instincts that tell them to eat other Herbivores that have to be suppressed so that both Nomivores can live in perfect harmony together. Stronger Carnivores such as Bears are required to take strength limiter drugs that limit their growth and prevent them from taking on even more muscle. Carnivores often find themselves getting drawn in to settle conflicts or dangerous situations by Herbivores around them due to their physical capabilities. Carnivores of all species have to monitor their strength as to keep from harming frailer species by accident and accidents such as accidentally dismembering other species due to a lack of understanding their true strength are common. Eating meat is strictly prohibited and many Carnivores use the alternative of eating insects or subsisting on other kinds of meals. However, illegal meat dealings and consumption are incredibly commonplace among Carnivores in places like the Back Alley Market. Carnivores who consume meat from a living creature and are pulled in by the police for it are marked as a Predatory Offender and it is officially marked on your permanent criminal record and with it several limitations on your interactions with Herbivores.
Herbivores are the Nomivores of the Beastars universe that do not have the capability to digest and process meat. They are often frailer than their meat capable counterparts but on the other hand they don’t suffer as much prejudice. When a Carnivore argues with a Herbivore the police will almost always take the side of the Herbivore regardless of the factors that led to that situation. That said they are almost never as physically capable and often find themselves fearing for their lives on simple trips to the grocery store at night. Overall their lives are simpler but more danger filled.
Hybrids are the often unsanctioned offspring of two different species. Their lives are often even more oppressed than those of Carnivores with many finding them easy targets of bullying due to their unnatural looks. Most 50/50 offsprings are evenly split with the best genes of both Nomivores but in rare cases, the other half doesn’t surface until late into the Nomivores life. Among these are the even rarer products of a romance between a Carnivore and a Herbivore. These among their own kind are seen as abominations and have no sense of taste with everything having the taste and texture of raw sand. The government highly disapproves of most romantic situations between different species and offers several incentives and funds for same-species couples. Children born from these romances are often abandoned and have to take up safety in orphanages that are rarely funded by the government.
What Nomivores are capable of varies wildly based on their species. You can select any species that is able to function on land (land mammals included). When filling out the species section of your character application, you can list any notable abilities that your character's species is capable of. Any and all abilities must be backed up by scientific data, but as long as you can prove what they are capable of then its allowed! We are very free-form so try to have fun with it.
